Mother's Day Poem

My Mother’s Smile

The cool autumn day we drive in the truck
Through mountains and valleys alight
With deep changing colors and waning sky
My Mother sits beside my Father in complete happiness

Behind them we think thoughts, not of amber sky
Or the beauty of mountains
Or the valleys alight
With purple, indigo, red, and brilliant yellow
We dream dreams that run through a boy’s mind

It is my dear mother who turns our thoughts
To outside ourselves at the picturesque sky
To gaze upon such brilliant creation
To remember God and beauty and magnificence
She smiles warmly at my Father

Years go by until I treasure this time
When I sit alone and gaze serenely at nature
My mind drifts back to that moment
Watching my mother teach us of life
Elated with the scenery and such joy in her smile

She knew it not then, but was pointing to God
And teaching her children to be still
To look outside ones self at the beauty all around
She smiles warmly at my Father
